Longwave – Secrets Are Sinister

Longwave

It’s been a while since I’ve heard of these guys. The last time was sophomore year when I was DJing for WTBU in Boston and came across their last record, “There’s A Fire,” in the rotation shelf. They didn’t leave much of an impression at all as most of their stuff seemed quite bland at first listen. Then, this record comes out, 2008’s “Secrets Are Sinister,” and I am blown away. It’s a completely different band with a redrawn energy and focus. Blending elements of shoegaze and post-punk they create melodies that just simply stick. Even more impressive was their live set. While playing to a sorry crowd in Chapel Hill a week ago, their sound was unexpectedly tight and LOUD with some impressive guitar work. Heavy distortion with strong melodies are always the best. Check them out at SXSW this year. I know I will.
